Music is the combination of vocal words and instrument sounds to express emotion or to show the talent of an individual. “From big cities to remote villages, to deserts to soggy rainforests, from the peak of the Himalayas, music has always been an actual part of daily life for people all over the world” (Rosas). There’s a huge impact on people’s lives because of music. In the documentary, The Story of Lil Baby, he talks about how certain situations have made him into who he is today. The Untrapped, The Story of Lil Baby was released on August 26, 2022, the film was written and directed by Karam Gill. Baby states, “I try to make sure I put real life in my music” (52:49-52:52). Baby believes he is who he has become because of his music and factual lyrics within the world. In the documentary, Untrapped:  The Story of Lil Baby, the director showcases how Lil Baby got his start and how rap made him into a legend.

Black communities allow each other to get together to enjoy music and have a delightful time. Black communities play a huge role in Lil Baby’s documentary by reminiscing how his family motivates him and give him ideas for his songs. Baby allows others to speak in his documentary and allow them to reflect on their bitter times in the apartment they all stay in. “I got some checks that I ain’t touched them for Loyal and Jason” (Humble 0:46-0:49). This song has an impact on the Credibility role by explaining the support his family gives that he values. “He tells me, daddy, I want to do everything you do… And that means the most to me, I take that serious” (06:12-06:30). Mentality states how he’s grinding hard for his kids. Lil Baby emphasizes how he started on a little street in Atlanta and blew with one song. The family has a big impact on him and what makes him make his music.

Social Justice is the justice for opportunities and wealth within a culture. Threw out Baby’s documentary he justifies how he had an opportunity to rap and get where he is with music and took the chance to get there. This brought him the money and the wealthy place, he’s at now. “The major caveat here is that these days it mostly only applies to small rural communities” (Rosas). Logic says about 98% of artists started in small areas around the world. “Why should they tear it down just for three weeks for the Olympics… Put all these people out of housing… Walls are built on the side of the interstate so that poverty could not be seen because Atlanta needs to see in an important part of the world” (10:43-10:58). This is crucial because these areas have impacts on people’s lives in positive and negative ways. Many people are not being treated equally and some can grow and have good effects on their lives.

Violence played an essential role in the emotional impact Lil Baby had on the hip-hop genre. During a part of the time in his life, he attempted to make a change within the violence going on where he lived. Within music, there were lots of meanings and aspects behind those different lyrics. “Thinking about everything that’s going on… I boost security up at my home” (The Bigger Picture 1:24-1:26). He had an open eye on what was happening in his area and wrote about this in his songs for a message that there’s gun violence, black policies are killing other black people, and we must stay safe somehow. “Our people died for us to be free” (The Bigger Picture 3:35-3:37). Baby tours Paris and his producer states, “It’s kind of like the same situation going on back in the hood… People might look a Lil different, or language might be a Lil different but it’s the same thing” (41:06-43:30). This explains how Baby’s life story and music connect to not just individuals around you but people across the world going through the same thing. This is then when cultures love his music because they are feeling and can agree with the meaning behind his lyrics.

Black communities, Violence, and Social Justice played many roles in music and culture. His music connects to culture by not who he is but by what he is saying when rapping songs. Baby saved many blacks and allowed them to come out and stand up for our culture. He starts a movement and allow blacks to be able to remember what was going on in the world. Lastly, these aspects came together and visually spoke on how Lil Baby started and became a legend.

Reflection

When I first started writing my second essay about Analyzing a Documentary for ENGL 1101, I expected it to be a bit better and less time-consuming than the first one. There were many things I could relate to more on this topic which made it easier for me to explain and cite evidence because I know and understand the meanings. My experiences during this writing were good, I enjoyed writing this essay because I was able to explain feelings on how growing people are growing up and how it is hard in the world. I explained how Lil Baby’s music is a good explanation and connects to culture because he speaks about a lot of daily problems and events going on in the world now. My thoughts during this essay were to just get it done, not to play around and knock it out of the way. Which I was able to do. A challenging part for me in the essay will be the conclusion, in which I sometimes get stuck and do not be knowing what to say. While moving forward in writing essays I will be more confident and able to explain and write thoroughly about several topics.

I learned documentaries are a background of something or someone’s life in which they are living. I learned Culture and Music can connect in ways in which artist writes their music. In the future, I can apply what I learn to write a documentary essay by gathering information and citations that fit the topic. Grammar was a big part of my essay. My professor gave many explanations and read each article to make sure every student did not have a chance to not read it or must struggle to create reading it alone. I learned this by making mistakes in my essay and by my professor correcting what was wrong. In the future, I can apply it to things done in the future because I can know corrections and can fluently write essays. I have learned to brainstorm and annotate passages to find out information when about writing. I can use writing as an inquiry in the future by brainstorming, and annotating passages, to find out more details about my topic.
